Jammu, July 13: Exhorting womenfolk to actively participate in the coming elections of the Block Development Councils (BDCs) to get due share, President Pradesh Mahila Congress Indu Pawar on Saturday said that decision to reserve seats for women is the victory of Congress's long struggle to ensure equal share for females. Addressing a meeting of Mahila Congress workers here this afternoon in connection with the coming BDCs elections in J&K, Indu Pawar, President Pradesh Mahila Congress J&K State reminded the workers it was during NC-Congress regime in the state that process for conducting BDCs elections were started and it was long struggle of the Congress that Governor's administration is taking some steps to strengthen Panchayati Raj Institutions in J&K.
Pawar recalled that when Panchayats elections were held during previous NC-Congress government, Congress leadership had taken a tough stand to ensure reservation of weaker sections and women in the BDCs so that marginalized sections of the society must be empowered. She said for the last so many years Congress has been struggling to ensure reservation for women in the three tiers of Panchayati Raj Institutions in J&K.
Pointing towards notification issued by the Rural Development Department (RDD) to reserve seats for women in the BDCs, she said that it was result of Congress's struggle that government has reserved for seats for women in the BDCs.
