Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 27: In the wake of strict restrictions in Kashmir and Line of Control since August 4 (a day before Article 370 was abrogated), the Punjab based drug smugglers reportedly have become active in Jammu and its surroundings to sell drugs to the addicted persons on higher rates.
However, in a sharp contrast Jammu and Kashmir Police department has yet to take the preventive steps to curb this menace.
Since Article 370 was revoked by the Government of India, the restrictions and curfew have been imposed in various part of Kashmir Valley to avoid violence and loss of human lives which has restricted the supply of drugs from Pakistan in Kashmir.
Here need to mention that inter- state drug smugglers from Damtal (place situated on Punjab and Himachal border) were also involved in the much-hyped case of death mystery of Divya Manhas, who died due to overdose in the year 2014.
As per official sources, seeking anonymity told Early Times, a group of smugglers from Punjab especially Gurdaspur and Damtal are coming in Jammu region with less quantity of drugs to sell them to the addicted persons at higher prices as drugs smuggling has been stopped from Pakistan through Kashmir. And demand of drugs has increased due to stopped supply from Kashmir and agents are ready to buy drugs on exorbitant rates.
"The smugglers do come in the morning from the native place and return to their state after selling the drugs to agents who are supplying the drugs to the youth who are indulged in this practice," sources claimed, adding that police are on alert and working on a strategy to curb the menace by stopping the supply.
Pertinently, thousands of young men and women of Jammu region have slipped into the dark alleys of heroin addiction as many groups of Kashmir as well as Punjab and Himachal have been smuggling drugs in the region for the last many years. "It is a notorious design of anti-social elements to ruin the next generation of the region as well as the country and also escalate criminal and terror activities, "they added.
Denying Punjab and Himachal based smugglers are active in Jammu after revocation of Article 370, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jammu Tejinder Singh said the police personnel have placed themselves on high alert to foil any attempt of smuggling in Jammu region.
