9/29/2019 10:34:19 PM

Early Times Report

Jammu, Sept 29: With countdown for the Block Development Committees (BDCs) elections has started, fearing that Kashmir based party high command will boycott the elections the Jammu based leaders of National Conference (NC) are a worried lot.
Credible sources said that majority of Jammu based NC leaders from entire Jammu region including those from Doda, Kishtwar, Ramban, Poonch and Rajouri wanted that party should contest crucial BDCs elections and they have conveyed their feeling to the senior leaders. "Keeping in view their Valley centric politics NC leadership is unlikely to participate in these elections so Jammu based leaders are worried", sources said and maintained that Jammu based leaders donot want to miss the opportunity because they are very much aware that BDC chairman is an important post.
On Wednesday, the government had announced to conduct the BDC elections on the party basis and this decision had evoked strong resentments from different political parties.
There are a total of 316 BDCs, including 147 in the Jammu region, 136 in Kashmir and 31 in Ladakh, in the state. The government has already announced 33 per cent reservation for women, besides SCs as per their population. A total of 105 BDCs will be reserved for women.
Credible sources said that majority of second rung NC leaders associated with party since long were of view that there was uncertainty about assembly elections in J&K so BDC elections are appropriate opportunity to attain power.
Panchayat elections held in the month of November 2018 on non party basis, many NC leaders had emerged victorious so these victorious candidates wanted to join electoral battle for BDCs elections to be held on party basis.
