Cong's volte-face on BDC elections: Pressure from Kashmir based leaders forced party to review its earlier decision to fight polls
10/8/2019 10:52:28 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 8: Following pressure from Valley based leaders, Congress has decided to rethink about its Friday's announcement to participate in the Block Development Council (BDC) elections, scheduled to be held on October 24.
Although Congress leadership had unanimously decided to fight these elections on Friday during a meeting, now party has announced to revisit its earlier decision. Today's announcement of Congress has raised many eye-brows because party's volte-face would affect BDC polls, going to be held first time in J&K.
"The party is taking a fresh review of the entire situation and getting feedback of different quarters especially from Kashmir Valley after the announcement of polls" chief spokesman of JKPCC Ravinder Sharma stated in a press note.
Interestingly on Friday Congress announced the party would participate in the first-ever BDC elections being held on October 24 despite strong reservations about the conduciveness of the overall political and security environment of such an electoral exercise when most of the leaders in the Valley are still under detention.
Credible sources said that party leadership was facing pressure from Kashmir based party leaders to boycott BDC elections. Kashmir based leaders are not ready to participate in BDC elections. "It was all due to pressure of Valley based leaders, Congress has decided to review its earlier decision taken unanimously", sources said that participating in BDC elections has created regional divide between Congress leadership because Jammu based leaders are interested to fight these elections not give free field to arch rival BJP in this part of State.
Meanwhile Sharma said, "JKPCC is taking review of the overall scenario with regard to BDC elections in the wake of continued restrictions on the majority of senior Congress leaders in entire Kashmir Valley"
He said that still there is total non-cooperation from the Govt. even after Congress party's willingness to participate in the elections announced unilateral by the Govt. on party basis.
