Early Times Report
Anantnag, Oct 25: Traffic chaos on Srinagar-Jammu National Highway due to its bad condition can be gauged from the fact that around five thousand trucks loaded with fresh apples are stranded on highway in Qazigund area of South Kashmir's Anantnag district.
The stranded truckrs are up in arms against the Jammu and Kashmir Government particularly a day after terrorists attacked and killed two more truck drivers in Shopain district of South Kashmir. The apple fruit loaded trucks are lined-up from Mirbazar to Jawhar Tunnel in Qazigund and they aren't allowed to move towards Jammu and Delhi, drivers told ET
They decried official apathy and hoax claims of state and central government regarding the smooth of movement of traffic on Srinagar-Jammu National Highway. "We are facing a number of problems on highway. We don't have enough food and money and our families are worried about our safety," they said.
Truck drivers said that they fear for their lives particularly after they came to know that terrorist have killed their two colleagues in Shopain district.
"No one (in the government) is showing any concern. We fear as terrorist have killed a driver therefore traffic department should move out us from here on priority," Gurdeep Singh, a truck driver said, adding he is stranded on the highway from last four days.
A traffic department official, who is looking after the National Highway in Qazigund area of South Kashmir confirmed to Early Times that around 4800 trucks are stranded on Highway.
"Yes around 4800 trucks are stranded on highway and today we started allowing them to move towards Jamnu,"he said.
The traffic department official said that trucks get stranded on highway to single way movement of traffic on Srinagar-Jammu National Highway.
The Qazigund-Udamphur patch of Highway, which is being constructed from last many years, is in bad condition and the highway remains off during winter due to landslides. The agency which is constructing the highway is facing sharp criticism for not marinating the required pace of construction works. The slow movement of fruit loaded trucks not only escalates fare rates but also cause damage to the fruit they ferry to Jammu and other cities of the country.
