Early Times Report

Srinagar, Nov 9: The upper reaches received fresh snowfall while the weather was cloudy on Saturday in the summer capital Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir valley, where the night temperature settled below freezing point at majority of the places.
The maximum temperature remained several degrees below normal due to damp weather, coupled with ice cold winds on Saturday in the valley, where many areas still remain under darkness due to suspension of power supply since Wednesday night following damage to transmission lines due to heavy snowfall.
A Met department spokesperson told that light to moderate snow would occur at many places in upper reaches while the weather will remain cloudy in the plains during the next 24 hours in the valley.
He said the weather is expected to improve from Sunday onwards and would remain dry till November 13.
At least ten people were killed during on Thursday due to heavy snowfall in Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir valley, where horticulture sector witness heavy losses.
After witnessing below freezing night temperature, people woke up to a chilly Saturday morning due to cloudy skies, coupled with ice cold winds in Srinagar. "The night temperature in Srinagar on Friday settled at minus 0.7 degree, which is below normal," he said.
Majority of the roofs and open fields were still covered under a blanket of over a foot of snow in the summer capital, Srinagar, which received the season's first snowfall on Thursday. Majority of interior roads, which were under a foot of snow in the city, are flooded with water following melting of snow. People could be seen wearing jackets, sweaters and pheran (traditional Kashmiri cloak), to evade chilly weather conditions in the city.
Pedestrians were finding it difficult to walk on the roads which were waterlogged due to melting of snow as the snow clearance operation was not undertaken in the interior areas.
Skies were cloudy in world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, which is covered under several feet of snow. The ski resort, about 55 km from here in north Kashmir, received over two feet of fresh snow since Wednesday night, resulting in dip in the night temperature.
Weather was also cloudy at world famous health resort of Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir, which also received moderate to heavy snowfall during the last 48 hours.
However, the upper reaches in Pahalgam, including Chandanwari, received heavy snowfall on Friday. Amarnath cave shine and its periphery, besides Sheshnag, Mahagung, Pisso top and Panjterni, also received very heavy snowfall.
