GDA, Gulmarg thana under scanner as 4 hotels come up illegally
12/20/2019 10:36:08 PM
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Dec 20: The officials of the Gulmarg Development Authority (GDA) have come under scanner as at least four hotels have come up illegally in the ski resort of Gulmarg.
Sources said the authorities had constituted a high level committee to probe if the fresh constructions have come up illegally in the picturesque meadows.
Sources said the committee in its report has said that building permissions for repairs of existing hotels were grossly misused to construct fresh structures after dismantling the previous ones.
Sources said all the new constructions are concrete columnar structures that have been raised only after the existing structures were demolished and a fresh foundation was laid.
Sources said not only fresh hotels have been constructed unlawfully but that they have come up almost double the size of the previously-existing structures.
"Two-storey structures have been converted into four storey structures and double the size of previous building. Such gross violations were never seen before in such a fragile location," said one official in the know of the report.
The official said what is most shocking is that the constructions have come up at a time when the High Court has enforced a blanket ban on any fresh constructions in the meadows.
"Allowing such constructions is brazen violation of the Court orders," the officials said.
Sources said apart from the Gulmarg Development Authority, the role of police station Gulmarg is also under scanner.
"How come did the police allow such big chunk of raw material pour into the meadows is something which the concerned police station will have to explain in due course of investigations," said the official.
When contacted a senior official admitted that the report into the illegal constructions has been received by the government. He said the case would be decided by the "competent authority."
