Children of lesser God
12/27/2019 12:57:10 AM

Education Department not paying much heed towards distributing winter uniforms among the children studying in the schools in border areas of Jammu region has once again proved that poor students are the children of lesser God.
Officials of the Education Department claimed that procuring the uniforms is the job of the officials of Samgara Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) and their job is only to distribute it among the needy students.
Poor children are stuck in the tussle between the two departments as officials seem least bothered about their plight. One needs to appreciate the resolve of these students, who are braving the chill and are pursuing their studies despite all the odds.
It is unfortunate that poor students have been deprived of the benefits which could have reached them if the people at helm would have taken some pains. Just passing the buck has left these children in lurch.
The uniforms among the children should have been distributed before the winter had set in but it has not happened. People who are running the J&K affairs need to take a serious note of children being made to suffer. They should realize that these children are the future of our country and they cannot be ignored.
According to the official figures there are around 650 government schools functioning in the border areas of Jammu province from Kathua to Jammu and the children enrolled in these schools come from the weaker sections of the society. And these children need to be encouraged in every possible way.
Officials entrusted with the job of procuring these uniforms and the ones who are supposed to distribute these need to be pulled up. They should be asked the reason for their failure to perform the job which was assigned to them. A proper mechanism needs to be put in place to ensure that children don't suffer due to the official apathy. Despite J&K being turned into a Union Territory officials don't seem to have changed their style of functioning. They continue to behave like monarchs and treat common people like their subjects. But ignoring children and their needs is unacceptable.
This is not for the first time that children have not been provided with the winter uniforms. It has happened in the past on many occasions and unfortunately this practice has been going on unchecked. One hopes that with the new set up in place such practices would be done away with and the ones who don't take their job seriously will be held accountable.
