Srinagar records coldest night at -5.8 degree, Drass freezes at -28.6 degree

Srinagar, Dec 28 There was no respite from chilly weather conditions as the mercury remained several notches below freezing point due to dry weather in Kashmir valley, where the summer capital, Srinagar, recorded coldest night of the season so far on Saturday at minus 5.8 degree.
However, the Sun made an appearance from behind the cloud, resulting in some improvement in the day temperature though the ice cold winds continued in the valley, where weather will remain dry till December 31.
Border town of Drass was the coldest place in the region at minus 28.6 degree, followed by Leh, where the mercury dipped over a degree from Friday and settled at minus 20.7 degree.
A Met department spokesperson said that skies will remain clear during the next 48 hours, resulting in further dip in the minimum temperature though the maximum temperature will remain above normal.
The mercury at Srinagar dipped further and settled at minus 5.8 degree, which is the coldest minimum temperature recorded in the summer capital so far this season. The night temperature in the city was several degrees below normal. People work up to a chilly Saturday morning in Srinagar though as the day progressed bright sunshine greeted people in the afternoon though ice cold winds continued.
Despite an improvement of a degree from Friday in the night temperature, world famous health resort of Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir, was the coldest place in the valley at minus 11.2 degree.
The night temperature at world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, where the ski slopes are under several feet of snow, improved about 2 degree from Friday and settled at minus 7.5 degree. Despite chilly weather conditions, tourists could be seen enjoying snow activities at the ski resort, which is famous for its slopes and the quality of snow.
The mercury at Qazigund, gateway to the valley, Kupwara in north Kashmir and tourist resort of Kokernag settled at minus 10.8 degree, minus 6.2 degree and minus 7.6 degree, respectively.
