Early Times Report

Jammu, Jan 5: The administrations of several Government Degree Colleges (GDCs) have made mockery of much touted skill enhancement/vocational courses as exams are not conducted a some fixed dates, while students are in possession of question papers in advance, while some faculty members gave marks to students, even without taking the exams.
Sources informed Early Times that the Higher Education department had started skill enhancement/vocational courses nearly three years back.
The course was started with an aim to produce professionally qualified graduates with sound knowledge of their core discipline and expertise in their skills, so that the qualified youth would get jobs/self-employment.
“The University of Jammu has been announcing the final date sheet for exams of Semester 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th but the decision to finalize the exam date for Skill Enhancement/vocational course is to be taken by the College administrations”, sources said, adding that such loophole has virtually made such exam a ritualistic exercise, which involved several unfair means.
“The students have been skipping the exams for unimportant reasons, such as birthday of friend, trial of license, marriage of uncle beside others”, sources said, adding that the college administration has been pressurizing the faculty members to take exams, time and again.
Sources further said that some serious faculty member, have been considering such exercise as totally futile and also undermined the sanctity of examination system. “The faculty members have to set exams, twice or thrice”, sources said, adding that some faculty member have been using the system to enhance their result performance by giving the question papers in advance to the students.
“The University has not made it mandatory to take
attendance sheet and submit it to University, while inspections are not being done by the flying squads, due to which faculty members have also not been taking the exam seriously. The situation has reached to such a level that some faculty members give marks to the students, even without bothering about taking the exams”, sources alleged.
Controller Examination, Jammu University, Prof. Rajnikant was not available for comments as he was out of station. While Incharge Controller Dr. Arvind Jasrotia said that he has been looking after day today affairs but assured that he would take proper action.
