Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Jan 30: The district administration of Srinagar may have taken some steps in connection with Smart City Project but it has so far failed to address an all important issue concerning the common masses of the district.
The public transport system continues to be in shambles in Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir valley. Srinagar is probably the only city in the world which does not have any stand for the small public transport vehicles.
“Most of the Tata Sumos plying within the city limits have no stand whatsoever. As a result these vehicles could be seen boarding or alighting the passengers on the main road. This results into mess on the roads and there is no solution in sight,” said Mohammad Sultan, a resident of Shalimar.
Jehangir Chowk, is the most crowded place in the Srinagar city and the basic reason for the same that Tata Sumos could be seen there on the main road always. No step whatsoever has been taken to shift the Tata Sumos to a permanent place that could be used as a stand. “Not to talk of the Tata Sumos other passenger vehicles plying on important routes like Soura, Buchpora, Lal Bazar, Hazratbal and Qamarwari do not have any stand in the Lal Chowk or nearby areas. This creates fuss for the people especailly for those living in these areas,” said Abdul Majeed, a resident of Zakura.
The other aspect of the public transport that is missing in Srinagar city is the presence of smart vehicles. The introduction of electric buses in Srinagar has hit a roadblock since the services have not been useful for the people of summer capital of union territory of Jammu & Kashmir.
“The electric buses should have been introduced on all the important routes of Srinagar so that people heave a sigh of relief. The public transport system is in doldrums and the same needs to be improved at the earliest. Only then we can say that Srinagar deserves to be categorized as a smart city,” said Mohammad Yusuf, a resident of Humana.
People of the Srinagar district and other parts of Kashmir valley are yearning for top class public transport for years together. The residents of Srinagar say that if the transport system is not improved at this point of time then it would not be improved in the future as well. They demand that same should be done at the earliest so that there is some difference on the ground.
