Former J&K CMs in a mess
2/7/2020 10:42:24 PM
Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, hitting out at the three arrested former chief ministers of J&K during his speech in the Parliament is a direct hint that road to secure their freedom for Farooq Abdullah his son Omar Abdullah and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti is not going to be smooth.
The three former J&K CMs were put under detention on August 5, 2019, when Centre abrogated the special status of the State and bifurcated it into two union territories. Farooq Abdullah was booked under Public Safety Act in September last year, while Omar and Mehbooba were booked under the PSA yesterday, nearly six months after remaining in detention.
The decision to book Omar and Mehbooba under PSA was announced soon after the Prime Minister Modi said that the inflammatory statements given by the three former chief ministers ahead of abrogation of Article 370 were not acceptable. The trio had warned New Delhi if J&K's special status is fiddled with Kashmir will not continue to be a part of India. They had even stated that no one in J&K will be left to lift the tricolour.
The Prime Minister's speech has made it clear that the detained trio is being punished for challenging the sovereignty of the country. The three leaders have not been left with many options. It's clear now that whenever they are released they will have to assure the government and the nation that they would remain loyal to the country. History stands testimony to the fact that Kashmir centric leaders since 1947 have spoken in different languages. Their politics during the past seven decades revolved around Kashmir being an issue. Kashmiri leaders who ruled J&K till June 2018, used to issue statements to appease Pakistan and the separatists. Despite enjoying all perks and privileges provided by the Government of India, the Kashmir centric leaders failed to muster courage to call spade a spade and tell the world that J&K is an integral part of India and no power on earth can snatch it. Instead they always used to propagate that Pakistan is a party and separatists-the stooges of Pakistan in the Valley-are the stakeholders.
The government booking Omar and Mehbooba under PSA is a message to all the Kashmir centric leaders that times have changed in J&K and now 2+2 is simple 4. It cannot be 5 as there are no external dimensions to Kashmir which need to be addressed.
