SRINAGAR, Mar 7: In a tragic accident a couple and their daughter were charred to death in a fire incident at Sheshghari mohalla in the Khanyar area here in the summer capital of union territory of Jammu & Kashmir.
Reports said that the incident took place during the intervening night of Friday and Saturday when the four members of the family were sleeping in their rented accommodation at Sheshghari mohalla-Khanyar. Although, the couple managed to save one of their daughters both of them died along with another daughter.
Reports said that the family was sleeping in the first floor of the house when the whole house was hit by fire. The couple took one of the daughters and saved her from the blaze and took her to the ground floor of the house.
“The couple was able to save one of the two daughters and as they tried to save their daughter they came under huge flames. As a result of this the couple and the daughter died after being hit by the blaze. As a result of this a pall of gloom descended on the entire Sheshghari mohalla,” said eye-witnesses while sharing details with Early Times.
The deceased have been identified as Javed Ahmad Hakak, his wife Safiya Javed and their three year old daughter Hafsa Javed. Six years old Sadia Javed was able to escape the fire fury and she is the lone member of the family to have survived. Sadia is distraught after losing her parents and younger sister, a special child.
Locals said that a massive fire broke out from the house where Javaid was living on rent during the intervening night. They said that the fire turned the building into ashes within no time. The people started to rush towards the house as soon as they heard screams of the trapped family members.
It has been learnt that the family was living in a rented accommodation since their own house is under construction, not far away. Emotional scenes were witnessed when the funeral prayers of the deceased were held in the afternoon.
Meanwhile, expressing deep shock and sorrow Deputy Commissioner Srinagar Dr Shahid Iqbal Choudhary said the entire district administration is saddened by the tragic and painful fire incident last night at Khanyar area in which three members of a family lost their lives.
Sanctioning an ex gratia relief of 12 lakh rupees under SDRF and an additional 3 lakh rupees in favour of the surviving daughter he said no amount would ever be of help. Earlier in the morning Dr Shahid visited the site of the incident and also visited the injured daughter of the couple who died in the tragic incident along with their daughter.
