NIA arrests ex-sarpanch from Kashmir for terror links

New Delhi, May 1: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested a former sarpanch from north Kashmir for allegedly supplying arms to the Hizbul terrorists in the DSP Davinder Singh case.
Sources say Tariq Ahmad Mir - a former sarpanch from north Kashmir’s Shopian district - was an arms conduit who provided logistic support and arms to Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist Naveed Babu.
Naveed Babu was arrested along with tainted DSP Davinder Singh on January 11, this year.
Mir has been arrested from his residence in Baramulla amid lockdown, the sources have said. He is being kept in a single cell, which has been sanitised for the Covid-19 virus.
“He was arrested from his village in Baramulla on Wednesday,” a top official in the NIA confirmed. “Investigations are underway to spot his exact role in supplying the arms to terrorists.” He was produced before NIA court in Jammu where the agency got a six-day police remand.
Mir was sarpanch of Maldoora and is known to have close links with both NC and BJP in the Kashmir Valley. He is said to have turned coat for political mileage.
The NIA has now dug out his terror links, which they believe were established since July 2016, soon after killing of Hizbul commander Burhan Wani. He has also found to have links with arms suppliers in Baramulla, Uri and in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. He has two residences and has been married twice. The agency is looking at second wife's links in PoK, though they say, she is currently not under the scanner.
Sources say investigators are also trying to find out whether Mir was just a part of this terror conduit or associated with a larger terror network.
During the investigation, the sources say, Mir has confessed to knowing Naveed Babu - Hizbul commander but has denied any knowledge of DSP Davinder Singh.
Sources say the arrest could provide a vital link in the case and help to pin down over ground militant sympathisers doubling up as their arms suppliers.
