| COVID-19: Works of unorganized sector denied financial assistance | | Unorganised Workers Welfare Board constituted in 2016 forgot to enroll candidates | | Early Times Report
Jammu, May 1: The sheer negligence of Unorganised Workers Welfare Board (UWWB) has put the workers of unorganized sector in great distress. These workers have been denied financial assistance, which was announced by the Central Government soon after COVID-19 lockdown came into force.
Sources told Early Times that although the Unorganized Workers Social Security Act, 2008 was enacted for the welfare of the unorganized workers but it has remained confined to papers only.
The Unorganised Workers Welfare Board, was constituted in 2016 after much delay. “Shockingly, the Board didn’t comply with the rules given under Act and no visible progress was made by it, which can be gauged from the fact that no workers of unorganized sector were enrolled as registered workers as a result the drivers (auto, taxi drivers), conductors, auto mechanics, vendors and salesmen who comprise this unorganized sector have unable to get any benefit due to non-registration,” they alleged.
They further said that not only the workers of unorganized sector, even thousands of workers registered under Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board (BOCWWB), who were registered before 2018 have not been given special financial assistance on account COVID-19. Moreover, hundreds of workers’ registration cases completed in all respect are pending with the Labor Department.
Sources further informed that in district Jammu education assistance cases have been rejected for minor discrepancies even education assistances for pre 1st class has been rejected without concrete reason. “The apathetic attitude of department can be gauged from the fact that in district Reasi there are more than 8000 workers registered under BOCWWB but due to the negligence of the concerned department benefit has been given only to about 600 workers,” they alleged. |
