To consolidate vote bank, politicians spend “easily accumulated money” among voters
5/24/2020 12:47:19 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, May 23: Amid COVID-19 restrictions for the last over two months now, the primary concern of Jammu based politicians seemed to be gain publicity, consolidate vote bank through the utilization of their “easily accumulated money”, among a few selected population, mostly confined to their constituencies.
These politicians could be seen flouting the lockdown orders to gain publicity of their minimum efforts by regularly uploading their photographs and videos on social media platforms, which was otherwise banned by district administration, only to be openly violated by these politicians.
However the moot question making rounds among the honest people including the employees, bureaucrats, businessmen, shopkeepers beside others as from where these politicians have been getting money to fund these activities.
“They are not taking collections from the public or making appeals to the public to contribute in their helping efforts but have been spending from their own account, which clearly signals towards the sources of the money and there are bleak possibilities that the power hungry politicians had been spending through their honestly earned money”, a politician said, adding that the source of funding for these works was most probably the “corruptive practices” adopted by these politicians, when they were enjoying the fruits of power.
“By praising these politicians for their alleged public welfare initiatives during the lockdown, the general public is silently legitimizing the corrupt practices of these politicians and it would become an excuse for these politicians to make more money through corruption in the time to come”, a politician said.
If the publicity and consolidating the vote bank would not be the prime concern of the politicians, then it is a million dollar question as to why they have been openly violating the guidelines of District Development Commissioner, flooding their social media platforms as well as sending press-releases to media houses to give them publicity.
“Instead of silently helping the needy people, the politicians across the political spectrum in Jammu could be found violating lockdown orders on the pretext of helping the needy people. The chief intention behind such efforts of the politicians to distribute eatables through their own hands and then gain publicity, which is actually aimed at gaining publicity even during the pandemic”, a politician said, adding that enquires must be initiated against these politicians to know about the source of money, with which they have been helping the people.
There are many ways of genuinely helping the people. These politicians can donate money to PMCARES, while as they can also stock eatables, necessary items at their offices and contact the district administration for further distribution of the items to the needy people. Even community kitchens could also be started by these politicians in coordination with the district administration, so that the cooked food should be handed over to the administration for proper distribution but these politicians continue to distribute items with their own hands and then got their photographs clicked.
“Their cosmetic character aimed at wooing voters is also clear from their total disregard to the needy people of other areas as well as stray animals in the city, which have been struggling to survive and it is still unknown as how many of them have died of hunger”, another politician said, adding that by helping the people through the money, gathered by corrupt practices didn’t explain their true character but the true character of a politician could be gauged if he/she would spend his/her hard-earned money through honest means, on public welfare initiatives or fund such initiatives.
