Sanitary workers without proper protection gears; BJP leaders unconcerned
5/24/2020 11:54:23 PM

Early Times Report

Jammu, May 24: There is competition among publicity hungry BJP leaders to leaders to “felicitate” corona warriors’ only to ‘address to the galleries’, the ground staff of Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) is working without proper protection gears. Due to non-availability of protection gears these poor sanitary workers are performing their duties, at this crucial time, by putting their lives on the stake.
During the last two months, every day BJP leaders are felicitating corona warriors but those who are fighting the deadly disease on the ground at struggling to get basic gears.
JMC is headed by BJP as party has comfortable majority in this urban bodies but nothing has been done for the poor sanitary workers. Not only JMC, even almost all urban local bodies, across Jammu region, are controlled by BJP but the party top-leadership is non-serious about problems of the sanitary workers and other lower staff of these bodies.
Except felicitating sanitation workers, nothing concrete has been done by the higher-ups of the JMC, headed by BJP, to minimize risks of these poor people.
Interestingly, Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has already announced to provide health insurance cover to sanitation workers but JMC is not aware of the same.
But the same benefit is yet to be extended to the sanitation workers of JMC because those at the helm of the affairs are appears to be non-serious in solving problems of the ‘warriors’ of corona.
As per official record of the JMC there are 1481 Safai Karamcharies working in the organization who have been providing round the clock service to the people. Majority of these Safai Karamcharies are daily wagers or contractual employees getting meager salaries.
During the lockdown, these poor workers have been deployed to cleanse the garbage and keep lanes and drains free of filth and muck, the irony is that the force deployed has no standard equipment, gadgets and uniform for the purpose.
