Forest land encroachment bid foiled at Pahalgam, 10 Kanals retrieved

Anantnag, June 3: while displaying exemplary synergy, Forest Department, Pahalgam Development Authority and Revenue Department on Wednesday foiled a bid land encroachment at Frislan Pahalgam and retrieved around 10 Kanals of forest land.
Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Lidder Forest Division, Sheikh Mehraj told Early Times that they launched anti-encroachment drive after Range officer Pahalgam spotted few local residents encroaching land by fencing the land with bribed wire.
“We had already retrieved the land but few days back few locals while taking undue advantage of lockdown were fencing the area,” he said, adding the land is question is part of block Chandanwari and falls in Compartment number 14AC.
Chief Executive Officer Pahalgam Development Authority (PDA) Mushtaq Ahmad Simnani warned stern action against land encroachers. “We will not allow anyone to encroach the land or violate the laws here. We are aware of the fact that few people are trying to take undue advantage of the situation but action is being taken against those who try to encroach the land or violate the law of the land,” he said. It is important to here mention that over thrity (30) hectares of forest and state land is under encroachment at Pahalgam. Influential people mostly businessmen, bureaucrats and few politicians have encroached the forest land under the grab of controversial gazette 60-C and constructed huts and hotels on it. Locals at Pahalgam are demanding similar action against influential people have grabbed forest land at multiple places in Pahalgam. Over 2.63 lakh kanal forest land under encroachment in J&K According to the district wise figures, over 54,311 kanals of forest land is under encroachment in Rajouri district while as over 35422 kanal forest land is under illegal occupation in Poonch district. Over 19847 kanal of forest land is under encroachment in Reasi, over 15919 kanal in Doda, over 9944 kanals in Kishtwar, 37938 kanal in Ramban, over 3639 kanal in Jammu, 409 kanal in Samba, over 4350 kanal in Kathua and over 5341 kanal in Udhampur district.
As far as Kashmir valley is concerned, over 27094 kanal of forest land is under encroachment in Anantnag district, over 2939 kanal in Bandipora, over 11221 kanal in Baramulla, 7636 kanal in Budgam district, over 897 kanal in Kupwara, over 6589 kanals in Kulgam, over 8179 kanal in Ganderbal and over 12339 kanal in Shopian district.
