Make private schools accountable
6/12/2020 11:44:32 PM

Private schools have been in news since the day lockdown was imposed in Jammu and Kashmir. For the past three months the managements of the private educational institutions have thrown one or other, tantrum. The biggest concern for these institutions has been that parents should pay the full tuition fee and even fifty percent of the transportation fee.
According to the media reports many private schools have either slashed the salaries of their employees or have sent them on forced leave. Despite curtailing the expenses these schools have given no concession to parents, who despite facing salary cut and job losses are paying the fee of their children through their nose.
The latest tantrum which private schools association recently resorted to was that the Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (JKBOSE) should withdraw its circular to inspect these schools. If there is nothing wrong why are these schools afraid of inspection? They should allow the JKBOSE to go ahead.
The owners of the private schools across J&K have taken the parents for granted as they are aware of the fact that the government schools cannot compete with these institutions. They believe that they can dictate terms and call the shots.
There were complaints that the private schools without putting the requisite infrastructure at place created hype about the so-called online classes. Only thing which they promoted on the name of online classes was sending homework on What’sUp and then asking the students to take the pictures of the homework and send these back.
On many occasions, parents raised hue and cry about teachers not being available for interaction with the students. Following which it came to fore that these schools are running at minimal staff strength and the teachers are unable to cope up with the workload.
The Education Department needs to come up with a mechanism to find out about the quality of education provided by these schools during the last three months of the lockdown.
Someone needs to ask the managements of these private schools did they do anything during the lockdown months or they just made tall claims which remained confined to papers only. To begin with records of these schools should be checked to know how did they treat their staffers during lockdown. How many were retained and how many were shown the door and the amount which they generated as fee during all these months should be made public.
