EARLY TIMES REPORT

ANANTNAG, June 21: Even after a month, the inquiry reports related to the death of pregnant women allegedly due to medical negligence in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district is yet to come.
Two pregnant women had died at Maternity and Child Care Hospital Anantnag and Sub-District Hospital Seerhamdan in the month of April and May this year and subsequently the administration had ordered multiple probes into the both incidents.
Pregnant lady from Kharpora village of Kokernag, who died along with her twins on April 25, 2020, was declared positive for the novel coronavirus; however the 30 year old lady, a resident of Salia Nowpora Panzmulla area of Aishmuqam wasn’t sampled after her death. A video, showing the family moving the body of deceased pregnant lady on a stretcher on Iqbalabad road in Anantnag, had angered the local population after it went viral on social media sites.
The family of pregnant lady from Kharpora Kokernag had alleged mistreatment at Maternity and Child Care Hospital Anantnag and claimed that doctors at the hospital didn’t touch the deceased lady.
“We took her (Pregnant lady) to a doctor Hillar Kokernag and he advised us to shift her to Maternity and Child Care Hospital Anantnag. On reaching there we were mistreated. Even staff members didn’t touch her and told us to stay away as we had come from the Red Zone area,” Shakir Ahmad, relative of the deceased woman then told Early Times.
An internal inquiry, ordered by the hospital authorities, has reportedly absolved the doctors on duty, however Principal Government Medical College Anantnag continues to probe the matter.
“Now he (Principal Government Medical College Anantnag) has ordered a death review to find out the actual cause of death of the deceased lady,” official sources told Early Times.
Principal Government Medical College, Showkat Jeelani then had assured that he will bring out the facts within two days. “I have ordered an inquiry and within two days we will bring out the facts,” Dr Jeealni had then told Early Times.
Similarly the administration had ordered a probe into the death of a pregnant woman who died at Sub-District Hospital Seerhamdan and a video showing a family carrying her dead body on a hospital stretcher went viral on social media sites.
“Doctor and other staff didn’t pay much attention. She was given only three glucose bottles during the night and in the morning after her condition deteriorated they told us to take her to Sheerbagh,” Zahoor Ahmad, deceased pregnant lady’s husband had then told Early Times over the phone.
Block Medical Officer (BMO) Mattan immediately ordered suspension of the lady Medical Officer and Staff Nurse and ordered investigation into the matter. The district administration also ordered a probe into the incident and assured to complete the investigation but a month has lapsed but the status of probe isn’t known to anyone.
Apparently, official sources say that the administration has buried inquiry reports under carpet to shield all those involved into the death of pregnant women.
