Early Times Report

Anantnag, July 1: A man from Vailoo Kokernag in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district died due to cancer allegedly after a doctor, who operated upon him in a private nursing home eleven months ago, concealed ‘concerning findings’ to the family which misled the family and delayed treatment. Mushtaq Ahmad, who was in his 60’s, was operated by the doctor at a private nursing home in Anantnag back in the month of July-August 2019. Deceased man’s family says they met the doctor at Government Medical College Anantnag in early 2019. “He (doctor) operated on my father at a private nursing home in Anantnag and biopsy test was also conducted but he didn’t disclose that our father was suffering from cancer,” Masrat, deceased man’s daughter, told Early Times on Wednesday at her home in Vailoo Kokernag.
Doctor, she said, only advised the family to keep the deceased away from the firepot (Kangri) and direct sunlight.
“Later after nine months my father again developed complications and we took him to GMC Anantnag. Doctors at Anantnag referred him to SKIMS and there only we came to know that our father was suffering from cancer,” she said.
Masrat said that after the first surgery they continued to consult the doctor, who had operated upon him, for many months and the doctor conveyed that their father has recovered completely. “He (doctor) should have told us the truth in time so that we could have got our father treated. We took loans and put everything at stake to save the life of our father but couldn’t as cancer had spread in his whole body,” she said, while seeking justice.
Biopsy report, a copy of which lies with Early Times, reveals that the deceased person was suffering from cancer and was advised for clinical and radiological correlation but the family alleges that the doctor never conveyed the same thing.
“At GMC Anantnag and SKIMS doctors got furious after seeing the first biopsy report and told us it was the fault of the doctor who treated him at the first stage,” family members said.
Another biopsy report, conducted by SKIMS on 28-04-2020, reveals that cancer has metastasized.
The doctor in question, who works at Government Medical College Anantnag as Assistant Professor told Early Times that the deceased man’s family was conveyed well in time. “It is not my fault. The family even didn’t come to collect the biopsy report. I told them to continue the consultation,” he said.
On being asked why he didn’t refer the patient to any other hospital for treatment, he said that after surgery no treatment was required.
Meanwhile, the family has also filed a written complaint against the doctor at Police Station Kokernag and sought action.
