Incessant rains create havoc in Jammu, road caves in, vehicles damage

Early Times Report

Jammu, Aug 17 A number of vehicles were damaged and several houses were also partially damaged due to overnight incessant rains in Jammu and other parts of the region.
However, reports from other district said that some houses also suffered partial damages due to rains. Many household items were damaged or destroyed due to rain water in parts of Jammu.
Also in Jammu, rain water entered many houses and shops in places like Canal Road, Krishna Nagar, Bhagwati Nagar, Talab Tillo and other low-lying areas.
Due to heavy rainfall in the last midnight the houses & the business premises situated at Akhnoor road were flooded with water causing great difficulties and damages to the properties. The occupants of the premises situated on that road are regularly facing hardships during rainy seasons in pumping out muddy water which causes serious health hazards.
All the residents came out of their houses in the midnight as there was water everywhere in their premises.
In this context, that there is no drainage and sewerage system between the stretches from Canal Head on house side till Bakshi Nagar Bridge (on Akhnoor Road).
This part of the city has not been included in the drainage and sewerage project of ERA also and because of non-availability of the drainage and sewerage system the inhabitants of this area are facing a lot of difficulties in discharge of the drainage and sewerage of their houses and problem even increases particularly during the rainy season when the rainwater from road floods into the resident & commercial premises has already been brought up in the notice of Economic Reconstruction Agency (ERA) to take a call with Urban Environmental Engineering Department (UEED) to execute the sewerage and drainage plan in this area and in close coordination with NHIDCL.
The residents of Canal road are demanding to get sewerage and drainage constructed along with the road widening project, as once the flyover project is completed it would become notably difficult to tackle the construction of sewerage and drainage in this area at the later stage.
Due to heavy rainfall a portion of road caved in near Circular Road area in Jammu last night. Many vehicles parked along the road were also damaged due to the incessant downpour overnight.
The portion of the roads collapsed despite undergoing reconstruction just six months ago. The Jammu police has barricaded the are to prevent people from getting hurt and have asked them to stay away for safety reasons. Cops have also been deployed at various points near the area to maintain safety.
The locals blamed the administration for allegedly neglecting the repair of the damaged road.
Some of them said that the foundation of the road was also laid for parking by the former government but no work had been done on the ground.
Meanwhile, many people criticised the Jammu Municipal Corporation for not taking measures in advance in view of monsoon season.
They alleged that many nallahs and drains overflow in the rainy season and the dirty water enters their houses.
