EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, Aug 19: The transporters of Jammu Kashmir Union Territory have been suffering a lot due to continuous delay on the part of the government, which has been playing delay tactics in framing policy for the vehicles over 15 years due to which the transport business is going from bad to worse.
The representatives of Transport Associations have strongly criticized the administrative department as well as the government for not taking swift decisions to resolve the issues of transporters, due to which lakhs of commercial vehicles have gone off the road and rendering lakhs of people unemployed.
They further said that the PIL filed in High Court has also directed the government to allow the vehicles to ply on road upto 25 years with some riders like, securing fitness certificates after every six months, pollution certificates etc.
Moreover, the previous government has also passed the directions to allow the commercial vehicles of age 15-25 years but shockingly the orders and directions were not implemented by the administrative department, the transporters added. “In compliance to the order passed by the high Court, Cabinet decision No. 53/6 dated 9-3-2007. Making compulsory a passenger/ commercial vehicle aged between 15-25 to undergo fitness test after six months by order of the Government of Jammu and Kashmir,” they said. “People associated with the transport business have already suffered huge losses due to COVID-19 and subsequent curbs. Now delay by the Government has been making things worse for them as they are facing financial constraints. Scrapping of old vehicles is also suicide for transporters and apathetic attitude of UT administration has been weakening the transport industry due to which transporters are not able to clear bank loan, permit fees, hike in insurance, maintenance,” they said. Despite repeated attempts RTO Jammu could not be contacted as he remained unavailable though several calls were made to him, even didn’t reply to the texts to take his comment on the issue.
