SKUAST Jammu organises awareness camp

Jammu, Aug 22: A Parthenium awareness cum eradication programme was organized by KVK, Jammu in collaboration with AICRP-Weed Management and Division of Agronomy Faculty of Agriculture at Veterinary Campus R.S, Pura, SKUAST, Jammu. Dr Punit Choudhary, Head and Senior Scientist, KVK Jammu graced the event. Dr. Choudhary emphasized that Parthenium weed locally known as Carrot Grass is causing enormous losses in agricultural productivity, human being, animal health and biodiversity.
He further suggested that parthenium can only be managed by mobilizing the society for group action in collaborative mode. Dr. B.R Bazaya, Senior Scientist and Incharge AICRP-Weed Management highlighted various toxic effects to animals while grazing from parthenium infested areas. It causes dermatitis with pronounced skin lesions, anorexia, diarrhea and eye irritation in buffaloes, cows and goats. He further explained the effect of this weed causes hay fever, dermatitis, asthma, skin rashes, peeling skin and puffy eyes in human beings. Dr. R. Puniya Jr. Scientist, agronomy discussed in detail about the mechanical, chemical and biological control measures for management of Parthenium. Dr. Nawab Nashiruddullah, Dr. Dibyendu Chakraborty, Dr. Aditi Koul, Dr. Kawardeep Kaur, Dr Ravneet Kour, Dr. Sheetal Badyal, Dr. Dhirendra Kumar, Dr. Pranav Kumar from land bueatification and NSS wing and other staff of KVK & AICRP-Weed Management, SKUAST-Jammu participated in the campaign. Later on uprooted the Parthenium weed that have invaded in the R S Pura campus of SKUAST-J and pledged to eradicate this weed and disseminate the useful information provided by the KVK and AICRP scientists among other stakeholders in all possible ways to the farming community. The campaign is ended with vote of thanks by Miss Supneet Kour, AICRP-Weed Management, SKUAST, Jammu.
