Anantnag, Aug 22: The Anantnag district administration has finally woken up to pinpoint the land encroachments at South Kashmir’s famed tourist spot Pahalgam where over Two thousand five hundred (2500) hectares of Govt, forest and wildlife land is under encroachment.
Deputy Commissioner Anantnag, K K Sidha on Saturday constituted a committee of seven officials to pinpoint the land enrichment in the area falling under the jurisdiction of Pahalgam Development Authority.
The Committee headed Sub-Divisional Magistrate Pahalgam has been directed to conduct field survey, demarcation and subsequent recording of facts.
“The committee shall frame the list of encroachers indicating the quantum of land under encroachment along with the survey numbers,” reads the order issued by DC Anantnag.
The committee has been directed to complete the task of ‘pinpointing encroachments and verification of records’ before 30th September 2020.
From last several years, the Early Times has reported the issue related to encroachment Govt, forest and wildlife land at Pahalgam extensively.
At present, around 2500 kanals of Govt, forest and wildlife Land is under encroachment at Pahalgam.
“Approximately 90% land which is under encroachment at Pahalgam belongs to the Forest and Wildlife department,” an official told Early Times over phone. Influential people, he said, have constructed huts and hotels.
He said that on encroached forest land.
Sources revealed that a former Chief Engineer, who has encroached around 100 kanals of land, tops the list of encroachers.
“Most of the encroachers are influential either businessmen or retired officers,” they said, adding more people were attempting to encroach land under the grab of the infamous 60-C order.
They claimed that even few encroachers have managed to get the renovation permission from BOCA.
Few days ago, the Jammu and Kashmir High Court had also the details about the unauthorized occupation of land from Pahalgam Development Authority.
“The shall also place on record in a tabulation the details of leases; extent of land granted in Pahalgam/property leased; whether the lease is subsisting; if expired, the date of expiry, date of renewal, if at all; basis and amount of lease/license fee (monthly/yearly) date up to which department has been made and arrears, if any and details of notices if any issued to the lessees,” Court ordered.
The High Court also directed the Deputy Commissioner to verify and submit case wise details of encroachments.
The Early Times reported multiple times that the hotels and other business houses were running without lease agreements as their lease agreements had expired around 20 years ago. The land was leased out initially in 1935 and then revalidated in 1975; however since then the respective government didn’t address the issue.
