PDD bagged ‘Saubhagya Excellence Award’ by misleading GoI
100% electrification of J&K villages a ‘blatant lie’
9/6/2020 12:14:20 AM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Sept 5: Officials of the Power Development Department (PDD) had allegedly tricked the Government of India (GoI) by claiming that they have completed 100 percent electrification of villages in Jammu and Kashmir. However, till date the process has not been completed. It’s in place to mention here that on February 27, 2019, the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir bagged ‘Saubhagya Excellence Award’ for being the first state in the country to achieve 100% household electrification under the ‘Saubhagya’ scheme. The award for achieving cent percent household electrification was presented by the Union Minister of Power, New and Renewable Energy, R. K. Singh to representatives of J&K during the ‘Power Ministers’ Conference’ held in New Delhi. The award of highest order amounting to Rs 100 crore was given as a grant to J&K State to be spent in distribution infrastructure development. In addition, a cash prize of Rs 50 lakh was also given for distribution amongst the employees of JKPDD, who had contributed towards the implementation of the scheme.
However, as per the official sources, authorities in Jammu and Kashmir had to cut a sorry figure upon finding out that the scheme remains unimplemented in Jammu and Kashmir even today and the award of Rs 100 crores that the government has received from central ministry has been given erroneously. Sources informed that the PDD had provided wrong information to the government that it has completed the scheme on the ground and 100 percent villages and towns in J&K are now electrified. The blatant lies propagated by the department came to fore recently when delegations from far off hamlets met the authorities under public reach out program and complained that the electricity is yet to reach their hamlets. “We were all shocked to know this. We had informed the government that the scheme has been completed and no village in Jammu and Kashmir is without electricity. Now when reality has come to fore what will we tell the GOI. We may even have to return the award of Rs 100 crores. This is indeed a very pathetic functioning of the PDD. An inquiry soon will be ordered into this,” said an official privy to the development.
