Make liars accountable
9/7/2020 12:04:03 AM
The Power Development Department (PDD) ostensibly misleading the Government of India (GoI) by claiming that all the villages in Jammu and Kashmir have been electrified and bagging ‘Saubhagya Excellence Award’ for being the first state in the country to achieve 100% household electrification has opened a Pandora’s Box.
According to the media reports the PDD had provided wrong information to the Union Power Ministry in 2019 and now it has come to fore that many villages in the rural areas are without electricity.
The question is what was the need to mislead the GoI and create a wrong notion? What PDD wanted to achieve by telling a blatant lie? The probe needs to be ordered to ascertain what PDD wanted to prove by providing wrong information. Is it that the officials wanted incentives? Or there was a bigger motive behind it?
The people responsible for it need to be held accountable and brought to book.
If no action is taken against them it will set a wrong precedent and other departments can follow the footsteps of the erstwhile Power Development Department which has been divided into corporations after J&K’s transition into a Union Territory.
The power scenario in the erstwhile J&K State remained grim for the past seventy years. The politicians who ruled J&K played politics with this vital sector.
Their narrative revolved around getting the power projects back from National Hydro Power Corporation and other private players.
They didn’t focus on the needs of the people like ensuring that power reaches every far flung area of J&K. Nor did they ever bother to increase the power generation.
Their plans and ideas remained confined to papers only and they couldn’t translate their words into actions.
The insincere attitude of the politicians made the PDD officials complacent and they got away with everything.
But these officials should realize that times have changed and J&K has become a Union Territory and they can’t just mislead the Centre by telling lies and showing dreams.
The bifurication of PDD into two Corporations is a significant step towards streamlining the power sector in Jammu and Kashmir.
There is no place for deadwood in the department and the ones who will mislead their higher ups.
They need to be told in clear terms that “chalta hain” approach won’t work anymore and if they want to stay in jobs then they will have to deliver and work like professionals.
