TNWS rues over defunct street lights

JAMMU, Sept 11: Trikuta Nagar Welfare Society (TNWS) criticized the Jammu Municipal Corporation for not showing serious concern over the problems being faced by the people of Jammu city with regard to defunct street lights.
In this connection, a virtual meeting was conducted by Rajinder Kakkar, President TNWS wherein representatives of Trikuta Nagar Colony, Channi himmat , Janipur Residents Welfare Society and Consumer Welfare Association discussed inconvenience being face by people of various localities falling under Jammu Municipal Corporation due to defunct street lights, making it difficult for people to commute at night.
Threadbare discussions were also held over diverse public issues and problems people are facing and the bottlenecks within the department.
Regarding the street light installed by the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC), Rajinder said that the majority of the lights are worthless since not functioning. JMC had outsourced the works to EESL agency, which had assured that they shall continuously maintain the project and establish a control system that could be functional automatically for repairs and replacements but ‘nothing’ has been done so far. The residents feel cheated as no repairs have been carried out so far since leaving the street light dark.
“Jammu Municipal Corporation has signed an MoU with Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) worth Rs 32.50 crore for installation of LED street lights and new high mast lights of all the 75 Municipal wards of Jammu city. The EESL will have to maintain the defunct street lights for seven years,” Kakkar said.
“While the administration had spent crore of rupees on these projects of public welfare, but what is their value if these works and developmental projects are not maintained from time to time,” Kakkar said.
“Recently JMC installed street lights in different areas of Jammu city including Trikuta Nagar, Channi Himmat, Janipur. These lights at the majority of spots remained non-functional since the need of repair. The residents have requested the concerned authorities to take note of this serious issue and instruct the concerned agency to renovate the same,” the participants said.
“The EESL seems to be a bogus company and must be either having political influence or must have greased the palms of the department for obtaining the contract,” they rued.
The meeting informed that EESl agency is not attending the complaints of the general masses belonging to areas including Manipur, Indra Vihar and Janipur. “It has been months since we have filed complaints regarding the faulty street lights but concerned authorities failed us so far,” Kakkar said. If repair and replacement will take months, what is good in outsourcing the Developmental works to a bogus company; people asked JMC.
The participants appealed to the Mayor Chander Mohan to take strict action against the officials concerned and the EESL officials who are not following the guidelines of the MoU signed with JMC by not repairing the street lights within stipulated time.
Madam Rajani Rohmetra, VK Suri, SK Gupta, President CWA Jammu Vijay Mahajan, Secretary TNWS and others also attended the virtual meet.
