Silence of NC, PDP, Cong over Panchayat elections reflecting their negativity: Raman Suri
10/10/2020 11:27:26 PM

Early times Report

JAMMU, Oct 10: "Now that Rural by-elections to 12168 Panch and 1089 Sarpanch constituencies in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir are going to be held in order to strengthen the three tiers of democracy and empower villagers, political outfits like PDP, Congress and NC are maintaining a criminal silence and have lost words to appreciate the empowerment of people at grass root levels".
This was stated by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) J&K Executive Member Raman Suri, who added that real democracy lies in decentralisation of powers and now when the new Panchs and Sarpanchs are going to be elected, these political parties are not speaking even a word. He said, the prime agenda of Union Government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is to empower people, strengthen democracy and make people the decision makers of their own fate. Raman Suri said that this is the reason why J&K too has decided to go for polls and empower Panchayats. During their tenure, PDP, NC and Congress were least bothered to decentralise powers and didn't even hold elections to local bodies for decades, allowing these elected institutions to lapse without further elections. This is why even after announcement of polls, they chose not to appreciate the move. Raman Suri appreciated Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha for asking Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Department to fill up of vacancies to 1089 posts of Sarpanchs and 12168 Panchs, spread over all 20 districts of the Union Territory, by holding elections. This, he said, is a welcome move which will empower Panchayats to decide about the development of villages of their own.
