Rajouri Admin playing with public health
Town sans slaughter house; vendors selling contaminated, rotten meat
10/13/2020 11:08:42 PM

ANKIT KESSAR
EARLY TIMES REPORT

RAJOURI, Oct 13: The negligence of the Rajouri Administration has been proving fatal for the people of town due to alleged selling of unhygienic meat by the local vendors as there is no check over the malpractice.
Sources told Early Times that the only slaughter house in the town was shut nearly two years ago after the building was declared unsafe due to its bad condition yet some vendors have reportedly been still using the shut slaughter house illegally, while many vendors slaughter the goats, sheep in their shops against the rules.
Although the Municipal Council has the responsibility to inspect this activity where veterinary doctors conduct the health check-up of the animals for slaughtering and declare it safe or unsafe but no such practice is being observed by the concerned department due to which vendors have been playing with the health of people who consume it.
They further said that many vendors slaughter animals near the drains, which spreads germs and creates smell and contaminates the meat. “Unhealthy animals for meat consumption are being slaughtered due to negligence of enforcement agencies. Rajouri Administration is at fault for not giving attention towards this grave matter, which is directly concerned with the health of people, who consume it,” they said, adding that no team of doctors visits to inspect the shops.
Executive Officer Municipal Council Rajouri, Mushtaq Ahmad Choudhary, when contacted, said that inspection or supervision of slaughtering of consumable animals doesn’t come under their control as it is the Sheep Husbandry Dept which looks after it. “Once there used to be the post of inspector for looking after it but now it has been abolished,” he said.
Meanwhile, Sarfraz Choudhary, Chief Officer of Sheep Husbandry said that they know the slaughter house has been lying closed for a few years due to poor condition of the building and our duty is to provide the doctors but we are not aware of where to send them.
