No end to extraction of construction material from rivers in Sunderbani

Early Times Report

SUNDERBANI, Oct 13: The ban imposed by the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir on the extraction of sand and other material used for construction has not reached this tehsil of Rajouri district since the extraction has been going on unabated with the authorities acting as mute spectators.
Sources told Early Times that the construction ‘mafia’ has been causing huge damage to the rivers of the Sunderbani tehsil since they are extracting sand and other construction material without any fail. They said the ‘mafia’ run by few influential people is giving a damn to the directions issued by High Court and Pollution Control Board.
“Rivers and streams in villages like Nallah, Siyah, Devak, Hathal, Latter, Bamla, Sunderbani Thanda Pani and others have virtually been vandalized by the mafia. They are extracting sand and other material like anything and the worst part of the story is that the concerned department is acting as a mute spectator,” said sources.
Sources said the ‘mafia’ use trucks and tippers to ferry the construction material to the people who are in need of the same in the various villages of the Sunderbani tehsil.
They said the rates of construction material vary from place to place with the seller selling the same on exorbitant rate under the nose of district administration.
Sources said that in May this year the District Mineral Officer (DMO) seized some vehicles in this regard but the drive faded with the passage of time. They said the DMO has fallen in line with the ‘mafia’ and it is due to this reason that no action is taken with regards to extraction of sand and other construction material.
When contacted Vinod Kumar, Additional Deputy Commissioner Rajouri said that the administration takes action as and when it receives some complaint with respect to extraction of construction material from rivers in the district. The locals demand that punitive action is taken against the people who are causing damage to rivers by extracting sand and other material.
