Jal Shakti Deptt refuses to repair defunct hand pump
10/16/2020 12:38:24 AM

EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, Oct 15: It may sound bizarre but it’s true that getting repaired a defunct hand pump has become virtually an uphill task for the people of Ward No 4 of Panchayat Rajpura of Marh Block, where people have been facing grave hardships due to the inordinate delay for the past one month.
The residents of Ward No 4 said that after a lot of effort by the people, the Jal Shakti department had installed the hand pump in their ward for public use as there is no tap water connection in the area due to non-laying of pipelines. “This hand pump is the only source of potable water for us but it has been more than a month, the hand pump is lying defunct,” said the residents.
“There are around 40-50 families in this ward, which are totally dependent on this hand pump for drinking water. I approached the concerned department for redressal of the problem but nothing has been done till date,” informed Satish Sharma, Panch of Ward No. 4, while talking to Early Times.
He further said that he was told by the cornered department that the action will be taken only after the communication from Deputy Commissioner Office Jammu is received. “Earlier the Ground Water Division of Jal Shakti Department used to take action on the complaint lodged by the people but now they have stopped taking complaints directly,” he said.
When Early Times contacted the concerned Executive Engineer Jal Shakti (PHE) Mech. GWDD, Jammu MS Khurana, said that they had repaired most of the defunct hand pumps just a month ago. “There were around 223 hand pumps in our information which were to be repaired and we have done their repair, we might have not received the information about this particular hand pump,” he said further adding that around Rs 10 lakhs were spent on repairing work.
“We receive funds for repair of hand pumps from the concerned District Administration. Now the panchayat representatives have to communicate to the concerned BDO, which is later sent to the concerned District Administration and only after we receive the information about the defunct hand pumps along with the funds we can go for the repair work,” Khurana said.
