Neglect of doctors, nursing staff at Board’s hospital killed my father, alleges BJP leader

Early Times Report

Jammu, Oct 15: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former vice-chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Kisan Advisory Board Daljit Singh Chib on Thursday alleged that his father, who had tested positive for COVID-19, died due to alleged carelessness of doctors and nursing staff of the so-called prestigious Board’s hospital here.
He said that his father was admitted in the hospital on September 24 and he died on October 12.
“Our people donated land for the establishment of the hospital but it has totally turned out to be a business enterprise. The only motive of the hospital is to make more and more money even during COVID-19 pandemic,” Chib told Early Times.
He said that the hospital charges Rs 38000 as room rent for one day with two patients. “The ICU and ventilator charges have to be paid separately,” he added.
Narrating his ordeal at the Board’s hospital, Chib said that his father, an ex-serviceman tested positive for COVID-19 on September 24 at Government Medical College and Hospital Jammu. “I shifted my father to Board’s hospital with a hope that it’s a private hospital and my father will get proper care. Except my wife, all other family members had also tested positive for COVID-19. I also preferred to stay at Board’s hospital so that I can remain near my father,” said, Chib.
He said that he was allotted a separate room with two beds with daily rent of Rs. 19,000 to each patient. “On October 6 the doctors said that my father’s condition has improved, so he has to be shifted from ICU to ward but on my request, my father was also shifted to my room in the hospital. After he was shifted he was getting oxygen supply but the oxygen mask was repeatedly slipping from my father’s face,” Chib said. “I started making calls as well as the room bell to call nursing staff but no nursing-staff was there. As the oxygen mask slipped, the oxygen supply dropped and without any nursing staff there I saw my father’s end near and near. I did everything to call the nursing staff and made phone calls but no one came. I was doing only one thing standing near my father and adjusting the oxygen mask,” he added.
The dreadful movements didn’t even end the next day. “No doctor or nursing staff visited the room during the night. I made phone calls to the hospital superintendent, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Board on 7th of October, who said that the doctor would only visit at 8 pm in the evening but when he didn’t come at the time also, I made another call to the CEO, after which a doctor visited the room. I was shocked when the doctor told me that no nurse will come to adjust the mask of your father. He asked about my father’s age and when I replied as above 80, the doctor said, “Unki Umar to Ho Hi Gyi Hai”. “It shocked and made me angry and I told the doctor to give an injection of poison to his father, when he will cross 80 years of age”, Chib said.
He said that after seeing the gross neglect at the hands of hospital administration as well as staff, he was forced to take voluntary discharge on October 8 and asked the new patient to shift on his bed to adjust the mask of his father. “On October 9, I made repeated phone calls to the phone numbers displayed by the Board’s hospital to know about my father’s condition. The respondent caller kept my call on hold for 15 minutes and later dropped it,” Chib said, adding that though his father was above 80, he had a strong will-power and resolve to fight as he was an ex-serviceman but neglect on part of Board’s hospital took away my father.
“People have been sending their parents to the Board’s hospital, hoping that better facilities as well as care but reality is totally opposite. My father died only due to neglect of doctors and nursing staff”, Chib alleged.
