Changing Times
12/7/2020 9:02:09 PM

Jammu and Kashmir's transition into a Union Territory has proved to be blessing for a common man as the work culture in the government offices has improved and the rampant corruption which used to be prevalent in the past seems to have declined.
Anti-graft agencies that couldn't do much when the political regimes were in power have become active during the past one year. These agencies have acted against such people who used to believe that they are above the law and are invincible.
The Anti-Corruption Bureau has been acting swiftly. Cases are being registered on daily basis. Many corrupt employees of different departments have been caught red handed while taking a bribe. Big fishes that used to enjoy impunity too have fallen in the net of various anti-graft agencies.
The question which everyone seems to be asking is what has changed during the one year that these agencies have become so active. The biggest change that has taken place is that political interference has ended. These agencies have got a freehand as no one is interfering in their functioning. On the other hand people too are coming forward in large numbers and helping these agencies to act against the elements who till the recent past were accountable to no one.
Since the day Manoj Sinha has taken over as the Lieutenant Governor of Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir he has made it amply clear that corruption won't be tolerated and whosoever is found involved in the corrupt practices will be dealt with as per law of the land.
The government employees who used to take everything in their stride seem to have become more punctual towards their jobs. They have realized that if they don't perform they can face the music as the government's new rule to axe anyone, who has completed 22-years of service or has attained 48-years of age is aimed at identifying the deadwood and chopping it off.
During the political regimes which were headed by the Kashmir centric leaders the issues related to governance had taken a back seat as the politicians could hardly spare anytime for these vital matters. But after J&K's transition into a Union Territory, the governance has become a priority. Officials are aware of the fact that they are being watched and if they indulge in any sort of misadventure they can end up in trouble. So no one wants to take chances in the newly carved out J&K UT and this is working in favour of a common man.
