Anganwari centers, schools await water connections
12/12/2020 12:01:03 AM
Early Times Report
jammu, Dec 11: Many government schools and Anganwaris centers in rural areas of Jammu and Kashmir are still without drinking water connection facilities.
Sources in Jal Shakti department told Early Times that the target to provide drinking water connections to the schools and anganwari centers could not be completed due to paucity of funds.
They further said that the department had to cover all schools and anganwaris by 2012-13 but it didn't prioritize the same due to which many schools remained uncovered particularly aganwari centres in many districts.
"Although the ratio of uncovered is not huge but failure of the department in meeting targets within a specified time period has deprived many institutions of water facilities whereas the angarnwaris centers are the most affected institutions," they added.
Astonishingly, the targets fixed were very low even then the lower targets could not be achieved fully by the PHE department.
They said that the department had neither called for any data from the concerned departments including Education and Social Welfare to arrive at the position of availability of the drinking water facility in the schools and the Anganwadis for compilation nor had fixed any targets for providing them the facility.
Although the department had compiled a fresh list of four thousands uncovered schools and forwarded to the Education Department for release of funds so as to provide piped water supply to all the uncovered schools, they were informed.
They alleged that the Department had not been serious in mitigating the water scarcity problem to the school-going children despite the programme being in operation for the last over 10 years but the department always gave its reason of non-availability of funds.
