BJP taking Jammu's farmers 'far granted' as work on Shahpur Kandi canal going on snail's pace

Early Times Report
jammu, Dec 11: Unlike their counterparts of Punjab and Haryana, majority of farmers of Jammu are not agitating against three Farms' law but ruling BJP is taking these peace loving farmers far-granted because their genuine problems are yet to be solved.
Farmers of the drought prone Kandi belt of Samba and Kathua districts are anxiously waiting for the completion of the project, work on the ambitious Shahpur Kandi canal is going at snail's pace- thanks to the causal approach of the authorities.
After signing of a fresh agreement between the government of Punjab and J&K on March 3, 2017, a ray of hope emerged among helpless farmers of Jammu province but the project is yet to be completed.
After signing a fresh agreement with Punjab, the J&K Government, in the Economic Survey report, had mentioned that the construction of the Shahpur Kandi canal would change the destiny of hundreds of farmers in Kathua and Samba districts but importance was not given to this ambitious project.
Farmers of these two districts were hoping that the state government would expedite work on this project after signing of the fresh agreement with Punjab government after solving all disputes but authorities at the helm of the affairs have failed to change their casual approach in dealing with such important developmental project.
In the year 1979, the then governments of J&K and Punjab had signed a bilateral agreement on sharing water from the Ravi. As per the agreement J&K will get 1,150 cusecs of water from the river by constructing a canal from Satwain to Basantpur and it will irrigate over hectares of land but its construction is yet to begin. Due to some dispute work on the construction of the canal was not started.
o 1979: First bilateral agreement was signed between then Chief Minister of Punjab, Prakash Singh Badal and J&K Chief Minister late Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah.
o 2008: Declared as National Project by Congress led UPA government.
o 2013-14: After years of delay work on the barrage started. Stopped by J&K over compensation issue.
o 2017: Under PDP-BJP government Punjab and J&K signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), but work didn't take off.
