Suri demands postponement of JCCI elections till settlement of case
12/15/2020 11:09:13 PM

EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, Dec 15: Member of Jammu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI) Raman Suri today said that unless the case regarding granting of voting rights to 461 legitimate members of JCCI pending before the Court is settled, elections to the new committee members of JCCI scheduled for 17th January 2021 should be put on hold. The case is sub-judice, and going to polls without these eligible members will be an injustice for them as they had duly deposited their fees and required documents in the office of Chamber at Rail head Complex, Jammu and became bonafide members, at par with already existing members. Addressing a press conference here today regarding the same, Raman Suri said that he is not averse of any democratic process of JCCI and was himself ready to contest elections for the post of President JCCI. However, holding elections by keeping the eligible members at bay will be a one-sided affair and not so democratic. Those barred from polling are legitimate businessmen and loyal tax payers of Jammu, who deserve all those rights that their fellow businessmen are enjoying as members of JCCI, he said.
Standing by the 461 aggrieved members of JCCI, Suri expressed his reluctance to contest elections until justice is delivered to all these members. He said, these eligible members from business, trade, travel and industrial sector had completed all required formalities needed to become a member of JCCI after which they had even been issued membership Id-cards and certificates, thereby validating their membership. He further questioned that if these members enrolled after 2017 are being denied voting rights, then why is JCCI charging annual membership fee decided after 2017 from them. He added, since they have not been given voting rights in the upcoming elections, he won’t contest JCCI elections and will take a step back for their cause until and unless these legitimate members get their rights, Suri added. Not averse to polls, Raman Suri reiterated that justice should be done with these members and hoped that until Court delivers its verdict, these polls will be stalled and held later democratically, wherein transparency will prevail to make JCCI a vibrant body representing all businessmen who want to serve the community in their own ways.
