Early Times Report
JAMMU, Dec 15: Directions of Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha yielded encouraging results as Railways on Tuesday announced that Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link will be completed by December 2022.
Although Lt Governor had set a deadline to complete the project by August 2022, the Railways authorities have extended it by four months. This rail link would connect Kashmir to the rest of India through the railway network.
"The work is going on in full swing. The prestigious project will be completed by the end of 2022", Northern Railway General Manager Ashutosh Gangal told reporters here.
The 272 km railway line is being undertaken at an estimated cost of Rs 28,000 crore by the Northern Railway.
He said that the first section connecting Udhampur to Katra and the third section between Banihal and Baramulla have been completed with both sections operational. The work to complete the most difficult Katra-Banihal section is going as per schedule, he added.
On August 22, this year J&K Lieutenant Governor had directed the Railways for completing the ambitious Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail line project by August 22, ahead of timeline. The project is being built at a cost of Rs 27,949 crore.
Sinha directed the Railway authorities to complete the remaining part of the project from Katra to Banihal by August 15, 2022. He announced that the Railways would run Vistadome coaches in Kashmir for attracting tourists on the Udhampur-Baramulla rail link, which was declared as a national project in 2002.
Sinha had also directed the Railways to expand the rail link towards unconnected areas of the Rajouri-Poonch and Kupwara region. On this, Railways officers informed that preliminary survey for 223-km-long Jammu-Poonch rail link at an estimated cost of Rs 22,768 crore was completed and submitted in 2017, and for the 39-km-long Baramulla-Kupwara rail link with an estimated cost of Rs. 3843 crore, the survey was completed and submitted to the Railway Board in July 2020.
