When comes to implement rules or collect taxes, Kashmiri gets relaxation but not Jammuites

Early Times Report

Jammu, Dec 28: When it comes to implement rules or collect taxes, Kashmir region usually get relaxations but Jammuites are not so fortunate and it holds again true in case of Fastag, which is being made mandatory for all vehicles from January 2021 but same facility is still useless at the sole toll plaza in district Anantnag of Kashmir region.
Pertinently, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has declared that Fastag (an electronic based highway toll collection tag) has been made mandatory from January 2021 for registration of vehicles as well as for third party insurance cover. It was also claimed that highway toll plazas would no longer accept cash as mode of payment.
A senior citizen of Jammu says that whenever it comes to collect taxes or collect various types of fees, rent etc or implement rules, same will be firstly imposed on Jammuites but Kashmiris will get relaxation.
“Though the collection of the power rent is higher in Jammu region but when the concerned department had planned to install electronic meters, it was decided to install maximum of the meters in Jammu and a minimum number in Kashmir. Similarly, now Fastag is being made compulsory but in Kashmir region, at the Anantnag toll plaza, same facility is still useless and only three days for next year are left”, he said, adding that though he has Fastag on his car but when he passed through the Anantnag toll plaza, the collection agents asked for cash.
Another Jammuite said, “Why same rules are not being implemented in Kashmir region. Earlier also the Fastag was made compulsory but toll collection authorities have failed to implement the same at Anantnag. Why are the same rules not applied to the Kashmir region?”
“People of Jammu have always been taken as granted by the successive governments and if cash payment facility will be given to Kashmir valley people, same should also be given at the Toll plazas of Jammu region”, an official said, adding that since decades in grant of funds, Kashmir region was given preference ignoring the Jammu region, but Jammuites were given preference in collection of taxes, various types of fees.
The Union government as well as Lieutenant Governor administration should ensure that same relaxations should also be given to Jammuites at the toll plazas in Jammu region.
