NC leader’s son wants to become Sgr Mayor
Gets cozy with BJP, puts father in quandary; Mattu may have to surrender

Early Times Report

Srinagar, Jan 5: Speculations are rife that a son of prominent National Conference leader, who recently won a ULB by-election, is eyeing the post of Srinagar Mayor.
Sources told Early Times that NC leader’s son enjoys a close proximity with the BJP leaders in Jammu and Kashmir as well as in New Delhi. “After the abrogation of Article 370, the NC leader’s son has tried his best to get cozy with the BJP leadership and has assured them all the possible support in the Valley,” they added. An insider said that the NC leader’s son has told his close associates that he could become the new Mayor of Srinagar soon as the BJP is likely to support him. “The incumbent Mayor of Srinagar, Junaid Azim Mattu, is aware about the developments taking place around him,” he added.
It’s in place to mention here that after failing to qualify the floor test Mattu had resigned from his post last year but a few months later the BJP extended support to him and he once again became Srinagar Mayor.
“Mattu too is close to BJP and the NC leader’s son will find it difficult to dislodge him. But still he is making all the efforts,” the insider said.
Another source said, “The close proximity of his son with the BJP has made the senior NC leader uncomfortable as he is famous for firing salvos against the saffron party.”
He said, “If his son becomes the Srinagar Mayor, the NC leader will be caught in a tricky situation. He will have to choose between the son and his party.”
The source said, “Till now the new candidate for Srinagar Mayor’s post has not made any such move that will indicate that he is the next choice but side talks are taking place.”
He said, “ A few BJP leaders in Kashmir are of the opinion that the party won’t dump Mattu and he will continue to hold the chair. But if the direction comes from the party high command then the incumbent Mayor may have to pave the way for NC leader’s son.”
