Lift Night Curbs
2/4/2021 12:07:41 AM

Many states and union territories lifting night restrictions to allow the revival of the economy has come as a ray of hope for the members of the battered business community as they have suffered huge losses during the past eleven months due to the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic.
The governments in other places are trying to take whatever steps they can to help the businessmen. But in Jammu and Kashmir, administration seems in no mood to act. The night life in Jammu remains to be crippled as shops and business establishments close at 9 pm sharp.
Recently, the Centre allowed the cinema halls to operate to their full capacity and educational institutions have been reopened too. If all the restrictions have been lifted then why night curbs are not being done away with in Jammu region?
The vaccination drive has already commenced and in coming days its pace is all set to be expedited. The COVID cases and deaths have too witnessed a decline.
So there doesn’t seem any reason for restrictions to continue. The night restrictions have hit food and beverage industry below the belt as most of the restaurants and bars used to do the major chunk of their business in the evening hours but for the past 11 months, these establishments have not been able to run. The J&K administration needs to reconsider its decision of keeping Jammu closed in the night hours. It needs to come forward and provide succor to the business community that has shown exemplary patience and tolerance during the COVID times. Losses that have been suffered during the past 11-months cannot be recovered soon but at least an attempt could be made to put Jammu on the path of revival. The administration maintaining silence over this burning issue has disappointed people as they were expecting that the helmsmen would take a cue from the governments of other States and UTs and take a call.
Lifting of night restrictions will allow people from neighboring states to enter Jammu. The increase in footfall could change the grim business scenario. One can understand that following the COVID guidelines is still mandatory. The businessmen are ready to follow all the procedures. They need to be given a chance. If they fail in keeping their word the administration can impose restrictions at any point of time, but before that an attempt has to be made to bring life back on track.
