After the restoration of 4G internet services in Jammu and Kashmir, speculations are rife that the next step could be J&K getting its statehood back.
When the Centre had abrogated J&K’s special status on August 5, 2019 Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, in the Parliament had assured that J&K’s statehood would be restored as soon as the normalcy returns.
During the past one and a half year many things have changed and the transition of J&K into a Union Territory has proved to be a blessing for the people. Since the day J&K has started functioning as a UT the ground situation has changed drastically. The pace of developmental works has picked up after Manoj Sinha took over as the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir. He has set a benchmark about how to govern.
There is a strong possibility about J&K getting its statehood back as the leaders sitting in the national capital have quite often reiterated that they are committed to it. Even if the statehood is restored, the politicians will have to walk an extra mile as the times have changed. What used to happen during the political regimes of erstwhile J&K State has no chance of getting repeated again. The Centre has given a roadmap to manage Jammu and Kashmir and it needs to be followed in letter and spirit.
After the delimitation exercise is completed it will end the dominance of the Kashmir centric leaders permanently as Jammu and Kashmir regions will have equal share in the Legislative Assembly. It will be for the first time in the past seven decades that a leader from Jammu region could get a chance to become the Chief Minister of J&K.
Restoring statehood is in the hands of the Centre and if the decision is taken it will be implemented. But for time being it appears that New Delhi’s entire focus is on development and restoring peace in J&K.
It appears that the restoration of statehood is directly linked with peace. During the past one and half year, security forces have been successful in wiping out militancy from the region. But the guard cannot be lowered as the people sitting across the Line of Control have been unable to digest J&K’s complete merger into the Union of India.
The year 2021 will be crucial for J&K. Many things will unfold in the coming months and one will have to wait and watch how the things shape up in coming days.
