Early Times Report

Jammu, Feb 14: In order to meet the growing power demand to end the electricity deficit in Jammu and Kashmir, the Central Government is constructing five hydroelectric projects (above 25 MW) aggregating to 1709.50 MW in the union territory and by this year, these projects are scheduled to be commissioned.
As per the official documents in possession of Early Times, Pakal Dul power project is being constructed in Kishtwar district and is set to generate an estimated 1000 MW of electricity.
The river/ basin for this project is Marusadar/ Chenab/ Indus and is scheduled to be commissioned in the financial year of 2024-25.
Similarly, another project Parnia power project is being constructed in Poonch district. Jammu and Kashmir Power Development Corporation is the executing agency of this project which will generate 37.50 MW of electricity and is scheduled to be commissioned in February next year.
On the other hand, Lower Kalnai power project is being constructed in Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir and is set to generate 48 MWs of electricity. It is likely to be commissioned in the financial year of 2023-24.
The power project namely Kiru being constructed in Kishtwar area and will generate 624 MWs of electricity. The project will be executed by CVPPL and is being commissioned in September 2024.
At present, eleven Hydro Electric Projects/ Power Stations (above 25 MW) totalling to 3360 MW are established and functional in Jammu and Kashmir. The construction of five more power projects which will add more than 1700MWs of power to the state generated hydro electricity is likely to revolutionise the overall power distribution scenario in Jammu and Kashmir. “It will be a big boost to Jammu and Kashmir’s power sector and will make the union territory self reliant in more ways than one. The planning and execution is precisely being done keeping in view the prevalent demand of power in the erstwhile state. We are hopeful that by the end of the year 2025, power outages here will be a thing of the past and it will be big leap for small, medium and large scale industries to prosper,” said an official involved in the commissioning process of these hydro power projects.
Pertinently, Government of India is assisting the States/UTs including UT of J&K under various ongoing schemes such as Integrated Power Development Scheme (IPDS) and Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY) for creation /augmentation of sub-transmission and distribution infrastructure, metering of distribution transformers/feeders/ consumers, underground (UG) and aerial bunched (AB) cables including IT enablement of distribution infrastructures.
In total the NHPC is generating 10939.5 MUs of power from its seven hydro power projects in Jammu and Kashmir namely Dulhasti , Salal, Salal-II , Sewa-II , Uri, Uri -II and Kishanganga. Similarly, Jammu and Kashmir State Power Development Corporation (JKSPDC) is producing 4833 MUs of power from four power projects presently operational at Ramban, Baramulla and Ganderbal.
