VIJAYPUR, Feb 28: GDC Vijaypur organized a webinar on the topic "Modern Drug Discovery: A Rational Approach" under the able guidance of Talat Parvez Rohella, Commissioner/Secretary, Higher Education Dept. in which Dr. Qazi Naveed Ahmed, Principal Scientist, Medicinal Chemistry Division, IIIM, was the resource person. Dr. Qazi emphasized that drug design is the design of small molecules that are complementary in shape and charge to the bio-molecular target to which they interact and bind and so is referred to as rational drug design. The objective of drug design is to find a chemical compound that can fit geometrically and chemically to a specific cavity on a protein target. The traditional methods in the design of new drugs discovered by coincidence or trial and error methods have been replaced as a result of development of new approaches and technologies that yield significant savings in time, money, energy and increase in diversity and specificity of lead compounds.
Dr. Sangeeta Sudan, Principal of the College exhorted that the observance of such events provide a real platform for budding scientists to make their career and profession in science. She further emphasized that Computer-aided methods have created rapid advances and revolutionized the way scientists search through millions of compounds in databases, choose suitable designs of drugs according to targeted protein molecules and promote promising novel drugs.
