BARAMULLA, Feb 28: Due to choked and defunct drains, water logging troubles common masses in scores of villages in north Kashmir.
Following rains on Saturday, various areas of north Kashmir were water-logged thus giving tough times to people.
The Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road, markets and localities remained water-logged, resulting in massive traffic jams at various places in north Kashmir on Sunday.
Bashir Ahmad from Singhpora Pattan said that, water logging was caused due to choked and defunct drains, many low lying areas have been submerged due to incessant rains that occurred on Saturday.
The drains are defunct or they have got blocked at various places that led to worsening of the situation, we were compelled to sit inside our homes since yesterday morning.
Due to effective desilting of drains has so far remained on papers only, causing rain water to overflow on the roads, said locals of Pattan area.
Nazir Ahmad from Baramulla said that in the past the central government released funds worth crores of rupees for construction of drainage system, but still we are in a deep slumber, yet 2014 floods are looming before us that took shape in just a few hours.
The drainage system has not been executed technically at several places, resulting in submerging of areas with a mere shower, locals told early times.
They said that there is a rampant use of banned plastic and polythene due to which it causes choking of drains in those areas where drainage systems are in place.
However sources from Uri area informed that, road leading to the Line of Control was briefly blocked after heavy rains triggered landslides in Uroosa village near Kaman post in Baramulla district on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday.
A massive landslide occurred during the intervening night of Saturday-Sunday near Aman Setu Bridge in Uroosa village, following which a team of 53 RCC of BRO reached the spot.
Sources also informed that due to lightning 6.3 KVA transformer at Noorkhah damaged in Sub Division Uri many villages of Boniyar tehsil under darkness
The villages include Lachipora, Mayan, Bijhama, Noorkhah, Bagna, Niloosa, Salambad Dachna, Kanchan, and others.
