Culvert constructed by R&B Department on Pahalgam road turns into 'accident spot'

ANANTNAG, Apr 14: Due to poor engineering, a culvert constructed by the R&B Department on Bijbehara-Langanbal Pahalgam in South Kashmir's Anantnag has turned into road accident spot.
According to reports, the R&B division Khanabal has spent a whopping amount of over Rs 10 lakh for the construction of culvert on the road in Liver Village of Pahalgam.
The engineers have constructed and raised the culvert in such a way that it became itself a 'vision obstruction' on the road that witness huge rush of vehicles particularly during Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage, they said.
A few days back, a motorcycle hit a car coming from the opposite side. A 19 year old boy who was riding the motorcycle and the pillion rider suffered critical injuries in the accident. Today, the teenager succumbed to his injuries at SKIMS. He was identified as Umar Gulzar of Hitigam Srigufwara while another injured teenager has been shifted to Delhi for treatment.
This is not for the first that a road accident has taken place at the spot.
A group of local residents told Early Times that they pointed out the engineering error to several senior officers of the department but they didn't pay any heed to their pleas.
"We alerted them and even as Sarpanch I raised the issue with Executive Engineer R&B Division Khanabal but he did nothing to rectify this mistake," Nisar Ahmad Mir, who recently got elected as Member of District Development Council Anantnag from Dachnipora Constituency, told Early Times over phone.
Nisar Ahmad Mir, who himself hails from Liver Village, said that the culvert constructed by R&B department has completely made the other side road invisibly for commuters and drivers. "It is completely a blind spot and as such frequent road accidents take place," he added.
He demanded action against the engineering responsible for this engineering error which he said has started taking the lives of innocent people.
Executive Engineer R&B Division Anantnag, Qazi Javed Amin admitted that the grade of the road hasn't been maintained as per norms.
"Yes I visited the spot twice and noticed that the grade of the road hasn't been maintained properly. I will be requesting Chief Engineer Sahab to help us so that it is corrected," he said.
Meanwhile, a senior officer told Early Times that action against the engineers, who constructed this culvert, can be initiated if Deputy Commissioner Anantnag orders a probe.
