Ramzan brings relief for Mehbooba, though for time being

Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 15: The on-going holy month of Ramzan has brought a big relief for former chief minister and president of Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) Mehbooba Mufti as recording her mother Gulshan Nazir”s statement by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has been deferred due to Ramzan and the prevailing COVID-19 situation.
For the last few days, Mehbooba has been trying to rake up this issue by targeting central agencies for, what she alleged, indulged into unnecessary harassing of her family.
As per report, the ED was conveyed about the same through an informal channel by Gulshan that recording of her statement is now expected to take place after a few weeks. Gulshan, in her seventies, was supposed to appear before the agency at its office here on Thursday in a case related to money laundering.
The agency would fix the next date of hearing after a few weeks, the officials said. Mehbooba was also questioned in this case on March 25 in Srinagar.
Before and after questioning by the ED, Mehbooba has made it a point to raise this issue in every platform to play ‘victim card’. Decision of the central agency to defer questioning of Mehbooba’s aged mother in the holy month of Ramzan and prevailing Corona situation has blunted the PDP president campaign against the agency.
The case has been filed under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
It is linked to the recovery of at least two diaries by the ED in which some purported payments made from the CM’s discretionary fund were made in alleged contravention of rules.
The recoveries were made during raids on an associate of Mehbooba. Few lakhs of rupees from these funds are alleged to have been transferred into the accounts of Gulshan and some others about which the ED wants to question her.
