Srinagar, May 11: The maximum temperature on Tuesday witnessed considerable dip and settled below normal due to moderate to heavy rain and overcast conditions in the summer capital, Srinagar, and other parts of Kashmir valley, where wet weather is predicted during the next 60 hours.
Meanwhile, barring world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, the night temperature improved and settled above normal across the valley.
A Met department spokesperson said that light to moderate rain and thunder storms would occur during the next 60 hours in the valley under the influence of a Western Disturbance (WD), which is active in the region.
He said there is a weather warning during the next four days, during which lightening, thundershowers and hails with gusty winds (30-40 km/hour) would occur at isolated places.
After witnessing above normal night temperature, people woke up to a chilly and rainy Tuesday morning in the summer capital, Srinagar, where people could be seen wearing sweaters and jackets to keep themselves warm.
The weather remains chilly throughout the day even as the rain stopped later in the morning though the skies remained cloudy. The night temperature in the city improved a degree from Monday and settled at 12.6 degree, which is about 2 degree above normal.
He said the light rain and thundershowers would occur during the next 24 hours in Srinagar, where the maximum and minimum temperature would settle at 24 degree and 14 degree, respectively.
Rain lashed world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, about 55 km from here in north Kashmir, resulting in chilly weather conditions during the day. The minimum in the ski resort, which remained deserted as shops and business establishments were closed and traffic was off the roads in view of extension of the lockdown till May 17, also dipped about a degree from Monday and settled at 5 degree, which is slightly below normal.
“All the shopkeepers remained closed while ATV drivers and pony owners have been asked not to come to the ski resort since April 29 evening following COVID lockdown,” a hotelier told UNI.
However, he said tourists, who have already make bookings in the hotels, were allowed to enter the resort.
The maximum temperature witnessed a dip across the valley due to rain and overcast conditions.
The night temperature at Qazigund, gateway to the valley, Kupwara in north Kashmir and tourist resort of Kokernag improved settle at 10.8 degree, 10.5 degree and 10.3 degree, respectively.
World famous health resort of Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir, also received light rain, resulting in dip in the maximum temperature. But, the night temperature at the resort improved about 3 degree from Monday and settled at 8.5 degree, which is 3 degree above normal. |
