EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, May 13:
Criticism is nothing new for the police department but the lockdown brought about a paradigm shift in policing while putting a human face on the law enforcing mechanism.

Ranging from enforcing COVID norms on the roads to securing containment zones to managing the movement of essential services to helping the starving population with food, all these experiences amid an unprecedented crisis have brought a historic moment for the police too.

In these turbulent times, there are few instances where a more generous and benevolent face of a policeman has come to fore which has had a soothing effect on the people, who are under immense stress due to continuous lockdowns and a persistent threat of corona pandemic.

A similar picture of men in khakis’ generosity was seen in Srinagar, the summer capital of J&K Union Territory, where the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Srinagar Sandeep Choudhary did what others in his department would hardly think of doing.

Setting a precedent of sorts, the SSP Choudhary while taking stock of the arrangements of strict implementation of the Corona curfew at Budshah Chowk area of Srinagar city, bought all the toys being sold by a little boy, toiling hard to earn a livelihood for his family.

After reaching Budshah Chowk, the SSP noticed from a distance that a boy was sitting on one corner of the road trying to sell the toys amid Corona curfew.

The senior police officer immediately went up to the boy and offered him to buy all his toys, he then paid Rs 6500 as a total cost of all the toys to the child and advised the little kid to return back to his home. The SSP made him aware of the pandemic and its ill effects while also advised him to take all precautions and avoid coming out of the home.

This humane face of the khaki uniform offered an insight to the prevention of corona on one hand while saving the child's employment on the other.

Following this heart touching scene, SSP Choudhary while speaking to few media persons, said that a child was selling balloons and toys on roadside near Budshah Chowk, adding that he bought all his merchandise and distributed it among the cops deployed in the area.

Meanwhile, a large number of people from all walks of life are appreciating this kind gesture of Srinagar Police in general and the SSP Srinagar in particular.
