ASHWANI SHARMA
EARLY TIMES REPORT

UDHAMPUR, May 19: The flash floods triggered by sudden downpour wreaked havoc in Udhampur town today as the ferocious water flow didn’t even spare the dead bodies brought for cremation at Devika Ghat crematorium because the mortal remains of the deceased washed away while being laid to rest on pyres.
This evening all of a sudden rain lashed the town leaving many lanes and roads waterlogged as almost all the drains as well as streams have been disturbed due to the ongoing work of sewerage project. While at the cremation ground at holy Devika Ghat when some dead bodies were being cremated, all of a sudden it started to rain heavily triggering flash floods which washed away the bodies lying on the pyres.
People present at the spot remained stunned over the development as the happening was not even heard of earlier as the washed away bodies were partially cremated and this was happening in front of their eyes for the very first time in their lifetime. It is pertinent to mention here that Devika is a popular and historic religious place which was least developed and different people had raised voices from time to time in this regard.
The strange incident went viral on social media and triggered discussions among different circles of the society.
When contacted Advocate Surinder Khajuria, president of Devika Committee Udhampur, said that nothing has been done by the administration to develop the ghats, crematorium or the cremation beds while the natural system of the rivulet has been disturbed badly, adding that the ongoing Devika project is only ornamental in substance as there is no working on other aspects of developing Devika like saving natural water resources, flood control or improving condition of the cremation beds.
